Weddings

SO, YOU ARE PLANNING TO BE MARRIED!?
CONGRATULATIONS!

Welcome To Saint James United Church
Rev. Debra J. Baker

We are happy you have decided to be married in our church. The church is the Family of God; and a place where families
celebrate the important occasions in their lives. Being married here is an indication God is important to you. We pray that what begins in God’s church on your wedding day will continue to grow and flourish with God’s help and direction, that you may grow together in love and God’s service, all the days of your life.

Our understanding of marriage and our policy about weddings is contained in this brochure. Please read it and bring it to your first meeting with the Minister.

THE PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE

Marriage is a gift of God, A sign of God’s grace a means by which we live in partnership and covenant with one another.
In marriage two people give themselves to each other to care for each other in good times and bad. They are linked to each other’s families, and they begin a new life together in the community.
It is a way of life that all should respect and none should lightly undertake. Marriage holds out for us all the vision and the hope of relationships founded on commitment and mutual support, fidelity and love, justice and compassion.

PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE

The Wedding Service is an authentic service of worship, not a civil ceremony. Those who come as guests come as worshippers. Those who come to be married come responding to God’s call to love one another in a very special and joyful way.
In the context of this special worship service, two people commit their lives to each other in vows of love and faithfulness, publicly before their family and friends
and before God.
Since you wish to be married at Saint James United Church:
1. We welcome and encourage you to worship with us regularly;
2. We encourage you to take a marriage preparation course.

While your wedding day is a very special moment, your marriage will last a lifetime. We at Saint James United Church would like to help you prepare for your life together, as well as help make your wedding day special.

BOOKING YOUR WEDDING

Please book your wedding at least three months ahead.

All weddings must be booked through the church office (328-6114), according to the sanctuary availability, provided by the secretary. Weddings booked at Saint James will be performed by the incumbent minister. In cases where our minister is unavailable for your wedding, you may arrange for another licensed clergyperson to preside. Your choice must be approved by our minister and the Session. You must ensure your marriage license is provided to the minister at least one week prior to the wedding date.

For your wedding day, you will be allotted a minimum of 4 hours prior to your time of marriage, to prepare the sanctuary for your service. In most cases, there is only one wedding booked per day; therefore, your access to the sanctuary would be much longer than 4 hours. Please contact the church 2 weeks prior to your wedding date, to check on possible time constraints.

NO OTHER EVENTS WILL BE BOOKED ON THE SAME DAY AS YOUR WEDDING WITH LESS THAN 2 WEEKS NOTICE.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEOS IN THE SANCTUARY

If you have your own photographer, he or she may take pictures discreetly at any time during your wedding.

Your guests also may take pictures from their seat in the pews, without flash, but please not during the wedding ceremony itself.  This can be a distraction for the minister and the couple in making the ceremony meaningful. You may also have a videographer tape your wedding, if you choose.

*PLEASE-NO CONFETTI OR RICE IN THE CHURCH!!
